New Grad Interview Success
Tip 7: Close with Strength
by Chris Fogarty
Too often, an interview ends with the interviewer asking if you have any questions and the interviewee saying “I don’t think so”. Wrong way to end an interview! The best way to end an interview is to ask for a bit more info on one of the topics brought up during the interview. And then use this to re-iterate how this position/organization is a good match with you.
For example – at the end of the interview you’re asked if you have any questions…you say:
Yes, thank you (Gary), I would like a bit more information on the new organization you’re forming. You mentioned that you are in process of picking the team both internally and externally, what are your top 2 priorities as far as your external selection process?
At this point your interviewer will answer the question and provide you with one or two priorities. Once he/she finishes you grab on to one of those priorities (or more if you qualify) and let your interviewer know that you are a fit based on the priorities mentioned due to whatever you have in your experience or skill base that meets the need. Additionally, knowing the interviewers selection priorities is great information for your follow up process.
Wrap up your interview by asking when they expect to make a decision and what the next steps in the process are. There is nothing worse than walking out the door with no idea on when to follow up or what the next steps are.
